# "Being mentioned by ChatGPT means you're winning." It doesn't, and treating it that way is costing you bookings.

> In the search-results era, a mention at least came with a link, something a person could click and act on. A lot of today's chat mentions carry neither the link nor any path to book. That's not just as weak as old-style visibility. It's often hollower.

## In short

- A search-era mention at least came with a link. A lot of chat mentions today carry neither the link nor a path to act.
- Being found was always only half the job, but this version of the mistake is sharper because there's often less connecting the mention to a next step.
- "Being found is not the same as being bought from" (covered in full in this site's agentic commerce hub) applies here specifically, not just generally.
- Selfe connects a business's real facts so a mention has somewhere to go, straight toward a booking.

A name with nowhere to go is worth less than it sounds. The search era at least gave a mention a link to stand on.

## The old version of this mistake, and the new one

A walking-holiday operator gets screenshotted: someone asked an AI agent for dog-friendly stays in the Lakes, and the business got named in the answer. The team celebrates it internally, the way they'd have celebrated ranking on page one a few years ago. Nobody checks whether anyone booked off the back of it, because there's no obvious way to check at all.

Search rankings taught a generation of businesses to treat visibility as the goal, and even that was only ever the first half of the job, being found still had to lead to being booked. But a search result at least came bundled with a link: a person reading it could click straight through and act. A chat mention frequently doesn't have that. The assistant says a name, the person reading it has no button, no link, nothing to click, just a name they'd have to go search for separately if they wanted to follow up at all.

## What "being found is not the same as being bought from" means here specifically

This hub's sibling on agentic commerce covers the wider version of this distinction properly: being found and being bought from are two different jobs. The chat-mention version of the mistake is a sharper case of the same thing, because there's often even less connecting the mention to an actual next step than a search result ever left out.

## What moves the needle

A mention only does real work if whatever's reading it, human or agent, has an actual path from that name to a checkable fact and a way to act on it. That's not about getting mentioned more. It's about a business's facts being reachable enough that the assistant, or the agent working on the person's behalf, can go straight from naming the business to confirming it's a real fit and moving toward a booking, rather than the trail going cold at the name.

## Where this shows up for a business

A mention gets somewhere to go once a business's real facts are connected, availability and terms an agent can check directly the moment it hears the name, rather than the conversation ending there. That's the gap Selfe closes.

## Should we stop tracking mentions altogether?

Track them if it's easy, but don't treat a mention count as a result on its own. The question that matters is whether it led anywhere.

## What makes a mention worth something?

Whether the agent or person hearing it can immediately check a real fact and move toward booking, not whether the name came up at all.
